Methodology Baby Signing, Escoletas and Families

The director and the educational team of the Escoleta Koala Pol. Son Castelló has entered fully into the new communication methodology that exists in the first stage of our children: the baby signing or sign language with babies, and they tell us about its benefits and ways to use it for families who want to introduce it.

This trend reminds us a lot of how the BLW (baby-led weaning) It was progressively introduced into our homes and schools, and we believe that more and more families will use this language of symbols with newborns, so our team, respectful of the progression of each child and the communication that the families choose, will will adapt using this method.

What is the Baby Signing method?

A baby at birth begins to relate to his closest environment, interacts with the world and with the people around him. However, during its first months of life, it does not have the ability to express itself verbally and it can create frustration for both the baby and the parents, by not being able to understand each other.

The baby uses crying to express his needs, being very difficult to understand what is happening to him, since it can be hunger, sleepiness, discomfort … As they grow they introduce sounds, babbles or movements, in order to express what they really need or want . We know that the need to communicate is innate, but is there a phase prior to language that allows us to carry out this communication? This is what the baby signing , a communication method for children from six or seven months of age, being a phase prior to the development of verbal language. It allows to facilitate understanding with parents and reduce crying as a form of communication.

This power motor development Since the hands are the first form of communication that babies have, through touch they discover their body and accompany it with the first gestures. It is at this moment where the baby signing appears. A much more effective tool than crying because each gesture that the baby is taught to do with his hands has a unique meaning. This, in addition to strengthening the bond between parents and children, improves communication between both parties without having to guess what the baby wants.

Although in Spain, this technique is still not well known, the first investigations were around the sixties and had its great boom in the United States in the eighties and nineties thanks to the work of Dr. Joseph García and professors Linda Acredolo and Susan Godgyn. They observed an amazing thing: Babies born to families of deaf parents, who watch their parents sign from birth, communicate more easily than babies of hearing parents.

It is advisable to start this method with few gestures, and that they are those that we use in daily routines, such as: eating, sleeping, changing diapers, bathing, mom, dad, etc. It is important perform the gesture very well and that it is always accompanied by the pronunciation of the word , in order to stimulate oral language as well. It is important to make the sign at the moment of the action.

What are the benefits of baby signing?

  • Reinforcement of emotional bond . Being able to have a tool that allows us to understand our baby is something surprising.
  • Favorable development of oral language. Children who sign tend to develop oral language earlier, since, to teach to sign, we are continually repeating the words.
  • Bilingualism. To be able to show children other phonetics in the first years of life.
  • Reinforcement in cases of special educational needs signs can improve your linguistic ability.

In this way, frustrations are reduced, at the same time that the child’s self-esteem and self-confidence are increased, and their socialization and positive relationships with their environment are facilitated.
